The drugs have worn off
My aim now is to get everything stored against the walls to leave the maximum building space. I have now come to my senses in terms of
designing my own boat and have decided to go ahead with building Radoslaw's 3.8m dinghy after all. It will fit in the garage but only
just and it is more like the boat I'd like to sail ... I think I will ignore the fact that it would probably crush the car for now. So,
to finish off the garage I just need to make some slim shelving units to fit into the small recesses under the windows and then I think
I'll have no more excuses ... I'll have to build a boat. On the other hand, a tidy and organised garage does wonders for your general
attitude towards DIY and I've been finding lots of other things to get on with like making even more shelving (this time for the attic),
painting the ornamental spiky bits from the house roof and even servicing the car.
I have finally used up all the available left-over wood and I need more to make the last set of shelves. I thought I may as well get most of the wood for the boat at the same time and the stuff for finishing the attic shelves. A local timber merchant showed me some external grade ply and I thought it looked perfectly good. It's got quite a nice grain so if, by any miracle, I make a nice job of the decks I could varnish it and it will look okay. This merchant doesn't do marine ply but the prices I've been finding for it are pretty frightening. I think I'll go for the normal external grade stuff. So I've worked out what I think I'll need and costed it from the B&Q website. More than £160! I've phoned the list into that local merchant to see what he comes back with. While I'm waiting what do you do when you can't get the right size stuff? I know I can plane it down (well, I could if some low-life hadn't relieved me of my power planner) but the wood yard's nearest size to 15 x 35 (of which I need quite a lot) is 41 x 12. He came back with a price about 20% cheaper than B&Q with delivery thrown in so, I went for it but dropped the 15 X 35 softwood from the list until I've worked out what to do about it.
